The second thing that I mentioned yesterday’s blog that people often advise you to do is to “never look backwards“.
“The past is the past” they might say
Well, do you know what they say about the past?
Unless we learn from it we are doomed to repeat it.
We can be skilful in how we analyse what has happened to us and what we have done in order to learn lessons and course correct.
Not beat ourselves up over what went wrong but have the integrity to analyse why it went wrong and stop us just keep repeating that same wrong.
Every year I set goals for that year then break them down to quarterly, monthly, weekly and daily goals.
At the start of each of those time frames, I look at what needs to be done and then review at the end of that time frame.
Not everything gets done.
Sometimes I end up doing nothing on particular goals.
But I achieve more overall by doing this.
And I learn from what didn’t happen.
Badly set goals and / or not great implementation of what needed to be done.
All insights gained by looking backwards.
Looking backwards to help us spring forward.
And, again, by trying not to look back at all we probably just end up doing it unskilfully.
Beating ourselves up over our perceived failures and imperfections.
By doing it selectively, intelligently and skilfully we can get the most from the past to maximize our future.
Much love,
