I heard a cool little story recently

It was to do with my other main passion in my life – my kids.

But it has a great parallel to us all on whatever journey we’re on.

It was on a parenting page I follow on FaceAche.

One parent was telling how they’d used an approach from their days in the army to help their child grow as a person.

When they were in the army, there were four acceptable responses to a questions / command / statement from a commanding officer.

“Yes sir”

“No sir”

“I don’t understand the question Sir”

And “No excuses Sir”

The teller of the story who had told this to their child who I think was about 8 or so and was not doing well with keeping her room tidy.

The next time the room was a mess and the dad walked in the little girl immediately, off her own bat, said “No excuses Daddy. I’ve let myself down. I’ll do better next time”.

Telling stories is a great way of getting an idea across.

Rather than just telling someone what to do, a good story gives them a parrallel they can compare to their own situation and a context for more abstract ideas.

That’s why we tell so many stories in these blogs.

Rather than telling you what to do, like most do.

If that approach worked, it would’ve worked by now, wouldn’t it.

The parallel here, of course, is that this is a useful way for all of to think.

An empowering one too.

Imagine if we only allowed ourselves these four responses.

Try it next time something doesn’t go how you would like it (bad eating, missed workout, etc) and see what happens next time.

Much love,
