Over the last few days I’ve talked a bit about some of the things that I talk about with people.

Here’s another one.

Consistency.

It’s something people often tell me is their goal when they first start.

I’ll ask them what they’re looking to achieve and they’ll say something like “I just need to be more consistent”.

And I’ll ask them what sort of results they’d like to get from that consistency.

To which they’ll say “Nothing particular. I just want to get in a good routine”.

Which I’ll dispute.

Because nobody’s really bothered about consistency or routines.

It’s the results that they produce.

If we were consistent with an approach and gained weight then we wouldn’t be happy that we’d been consistent, would we?

Consistency and routines are the ‘means’.

But without the ‘end’ we’re going to struggle to get much enthusiasm.

And It’s worth remembering that consistency isn’t necessarily needed.

It might be the approach that works for us.

But an ‘inconsistent approach’ might be as well.

As long as the average and total of what we’re doing takes is in the right direction there’s usually flexibility with what we can do.

An equal number of days of 700 calorie deficits and 500 calories surpluses will get the exact same result as everyday being 200 calories under maintenance (other numbers are available).

Three workouts one week and one the next gets the same result as two every week.

From my experience, it can often be that this desire for consistency is what derails us.

When we can’t do the version we think we should be doing, we end up doing essentially nothing.

If we slow down and speed up as circumstance dictates……..

But create that average that ticks the relevant boxes……..

We’ll make forward progress (it’s www.myrise.co.uk/apply for litereally guaranteed forward progress!)

Much love,
