I had an ad for a fitness facility pop up in my feed the other day.
Not a million miles from here but not overly close either.
I’d not heard of them before.
So I had a little nosey at their page.
It looked good.
They talked a lot about the recruitment standard of their trainers.
Which is great.
Because, as they said, standards in the Fitness Industry are, shall we say, variable.
The minimum qualification you need to work in the Fitness Industry is so easy that it’s no guarantee of quality.
And there are little to no “protected terms” in fitness.
Meaning anyone could call themselves a “Personal Trainer” and no one is going to stop them.
One sentence did jump out at me though.
I slightly adjusted it for the blog title.
“All of our trainers have a professional sports background. Meaning they are the best chance you have of keeping on track with your fitness goals.”
Which sounds great.
But I’m not convinced means (from that alone) that they are the best fit for the majority of the population.
Many people enter the fitness industry having (as it says on PT Profile boards in gyms the length and breadth of the country) “always loved sport since a young age”.
Probably been pretty good at it (obviously, if they got to professional level).
And that’s awesome.
But it doesn’t necessarily equip them with an understanding of the average person who might seek our services who has never particularly enjoyed exercise.
Or maybe did in the past, but things have changed over the years.
Whilst we’re all about making our methods of exercise as enjoyable as possible……………
I genuinely don’t know if I’ve ever enjoyed a workout enough to say I’d done it for fun.
It was largely a means to an end.
I definitely wouldn’t have done it if there was no physical or mental benefits attached.
And the vast majority of the people I’ve ever coached have felt fairly similarly.
A high level sporting background is a great help for training high level sports people who think and feel the same way.
It can be a hindrance for coaching and supporting the millions who don’t.
A very high proportion of ex military PTIs that I’ve known have struggled training people in “civvy street” because “they don’t do what I tell them to”.
You may or may not know that all our coaches started out as members.
Joined us because they felt we might be a solution to a problem they had.
Found our approach worked for them and enjoyed and believed in it so much that they wanted to train up and become part of the team.
I, of course, was never a member.
But I did have years of being overweight before I was in the Fitness Industry and made the changes that would form the backbone of our approach.
Which, I truly believe puts us in a great position to help our average member.
We get it.
We get it because we live it.
We know that life gets in the way.
That we’re time poor, stretched thin and feel overwhelmed a lot.
That we really “can’t be @rsed” sometimes.
That we’re torn between the things we want to do now for their immediate perceived benefits and the things that we don’t really fancy doing for their longer term benefits.
But…………
We also get that the conversations in our heads often make this all harder than it has to be.
That out mindsets drive our actions, behaviours, habits and results.
That we have beliefs we might benefit from questioning.
That sometimes we’re doing the equivalent of jamming down the accelerator ever harder………….
Whilst the handbrake is still on.
And that working on these things will lead to way more results than the “slightly modified list of instructions” that you’ve probably received elsewhere countless times.
Ultimately, there’s no right and wrong in who anyone chooses to employ to help them solve a problem.
A professional sporting background can have it’s place.
But if you want someone who “gets it”…………..
But will also help you, over time change what “it” is and how you see it………
Then that’s what we’re really good at.
If you’re already a member and getting results you’re happy with, I hope you agree.
If you’re a member and not getting the results you’re happy with, let’s talk.
Let’s start to explore that “it”.
And, if you’re not a member, then what are you waiting for? Pop here and do what hundreds have called “one of the best decisions I’ve ever made” –> www.myrise.co.uk/apply
Much love,
Jon ‘Actually went from fat kid to playing my ‘sport’ at the highest level in the UK. Although I’m sure many wouldn’t call it a ‘sport” Hall
