Who remembers Jeffrey Archer?

Rather dodgy former MP.

But rather good author.

I really enjoyed reading his books in my teenage years.

Which, looking back, was probably somewhat age inappropriate in places.

IIRC I just helped myself from my parent’s bookshelf 🙂

“Not a penny more not a penny less” was one of them.

A “page-turning tale of fraud, revenge and determination as four men stop at nothing to get back what was stolen from them” according to Amazon.

Through a series of plans they attempt (I won’t give away if they succeed) to ‘steal back’ one million dollars.

Not a penny more.

Not a penny less.

I was reminded of this book in a recent conversation.

Versions of which I (and, I should imagine, all FitPros) have had countless times over the years.

When coaching a member to help them figure out how to overcome some of the challenges they are facing.

“It’s alright for you” they said.

“You live in a gym”.

Now, I get it.

I understand what they mean.

But………..

At the same time……………

The actual things any FitPro needs to do to get in the shape are the same as any other human.

The time it takes is the same.

Not a second more, not a second less.

The decisions it takes are the same.

Not a choice more, not a choice less.

The energy balance equation works in the same way.

Not a calorie more, not a calorie less.

At most we save the commute time on days we’re actually in the club / gym / facility.

But then we have the challenge of having to motivate ourselves to do a workout in our workplace, when we could just go home after a long day.

Now, I get that it some ways it easier for us.

We’ve studied the best ways to do it.

We know the highest return on investment activities.

We know more than most about motivation and the best ways to set up for success.

But, ultimately, the stuff that needs to be done is exactly the same.

Not anything more, not anything less.

We’re all in the same boat.

We all have challenges.

Things that get in the way.

Different challenges person to person, sure.

But challenges nonetheless.

And, when we accept that we’re all on that shared journey………….

That we’re in this together………..

That they’ll be others with the same challenges and difficulties we face working round them………….

To achieve the same thing we want to achieve…………..

It becomes a different conversation in our heads.

We stop being a victim of our circumstances.

And become the master of our destiny 🙂
