I’ve mentioned many times that the most common reason I hear for people not doing what they set out to do……..
Is that they were “too busy”.
And I get that.
Both from over two decades of hearing that from people…….
And from being super busy myself.
But I also get, from both of the above, that that often doesn’t need to be the conversation ender that it appears to be.
For, busy as we are, that doesn’t mean we can’t be doing anything at all that will move us towards the results that we desire.
One thing I sometimes recommend to people when they think they’re “too busy” is to take a 15 minute log of how they use their time for a number of days.
Literally write down what they do every 15 minutes.
And use that as a starting point to find things they can stop doing, do less of and / or do more effectively and efficiently.
At this point one of three things can happen.
A – They do that and identify where they could make some adjustments to their use of time
B – They don’t do it
C – They do it and it turns out that they genuinely are too busy and there are no adjustments of time whatsoever that can be made.
Option C has never happened.
I’ve genuinely yet to meet a person who can show where the entirety of their week went without any of it being spent on lower value activities.
Or where absolutely none of it couldn’t be used a little more efficiently and effectively.
I genuinely struggle to believe that there is anyone out there who is using all 10,080 minutes in the week on high value, high importance, non-negotiable activities week in week out.
What usually happens, from my experience, is that we tell ourselves that what we could do “isn’t worth doing” (even though the research says otherwise).
And we neglect the other choices that we could make, with regards to our eating, that take zero additional time.
And, worst of all, we tell ourselves that we’re “too busy” to track our time and re-evaluate our usage of it.
Being “too busy to become less busy” being one of the maddest things that we can say!
Much love,
