Snowy last month, wasn’t it?
My two oldest sons spend half their week with their mum over near Bakewell.
So I have to cross the Cat and Fiddle and go round the outskirts of Buxton pretty regularly.
I couldn’t even get over a few times as it was so bad.
But a few weeks before that (when it was also snowing) I’d got over fine and was going round toward Harper Hill.
If you don’t know, there’s a big dip there just near to the Health and Safety Executive.
I stopped at the top.
My boys asked what I was doing.
I was trying to decide if I could get up the other side.
With the amount of snow there was.
After all, if I couldn’t I wasn’t going to drop down into the dip.
I needed to know I could power through and come out the other side before I’d attempt it.
Got some momentum up on the way down.
And we made it.
But it was hard work coming up the other side.
Sticking with Personal Training
Life is full of dips isn’t it?
We start anything new and we are full of what called ‘Uninformed Optimism’.
We don’t know all the ins and outs but it seems pretty exciting and we are enthused.
It’s the first few weeks when you join a gym, a slimming club or somewhere like us.
Or the start of a new job or relationship.
But then we hit the dip.
It gets a bit ‘hard’.
We get ”informed pessimism’.
“Shit, there’s actually quite a lot of hard work to do here”.
We hit that bottom point.
And we have two options.
1. Keep powering through. Enter the stage of ‘Informed Optimism’ where we realise it’s going to be an effort but it is worth it. Get there with time.
Or;
2. Stop
Give up what we’re doing.
Return to nothing.
Probably to restart again in the future.
Slipping into that never ending cycle.
Uninformed Optimism – Dip – Informed Pessimism – Stop – Repeat.
Everything has a dip.
Everything.
The size of the dip varies dependant on a combination of us and what the thing is.
But there will be a dip.
And just as we’d question if we kept getting caught in the snow in the same dip in the road………..
We should question if we get caught in the same dip in our health and fitness attempts.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with not even trying something.
Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.
Our lives to be lived how we wish.
I, in theory, would like to be able to play an instrument.
But that dip is too big.
The amount of effort it would take to come out of the other side just isn’t worth it to me.
So I don’t even try.
It would be madness to keep taking up new instruments and stop when it got a bit tough only to restart with another one at some point in the future.
Success in life comes from a combination of powering through some dips and knowing which ones to not even attempt (more than once anyway).
There’s absolutely nothing wrong with choosing not to lose weight or to take up regular exercise.
Your life, live it how you wish.
What we want to help you question at RISE in Macclesfield is that constant stopping and starting.
Hitting the dip and stopping.
Only to try again at a later date.
Either power through or don’t bother.
And save your time and energy for something that it’s better used for.
