What approach do you use for putting fuel in your car?

I’d assume most of us wait till it is somewhere between a quarter full and a number of miles into the warning light.

And then fill up.

Not always, sure.

But most will.

We could replace what we’ve use every day.

Put two or three (or ten or twenty depending on what we’ve been doing) pounds worth in each day.

Inefficient though, isn’t ?

While we’re there we may as well put as much in as we can.

To minimise the time spent on getting fuel.

It’s not the actual time that it takes the fuel to get out of the nozzle that’s different.

It would be the same on one long filling or ten shorter ones.

It’s the transitional costs of the process.

The driving into the petrol station, possibly waiting for a pump, getting out, filling up, paying, getting back in and getting out of the station.

We could do that once or ten times.

Once, obviously, being the preferable option.

Batching the stuff that needs to be done to get the important result.

Which we can do in a lot of areas.

We can cook a few meals worth at the same time a couple of times a week (feel free to tupperware up the whole week, but we never advocate that as if we can’t be bothered then assume most won’t either).

You know, making a second portion for lunch tomorrow or tea on Thursday when we’ll be in a rush.

We can do an online food order on Sunday night in less time than popping to Pret et al every lunch time.

We can maybe look at none food things like work and general logistics to see if we can batch to reduce those transitional costs and free up that time (and energy) for the food and exercise stuff.

You get the point.

Look where you can do the equivalent of “fill up while you’re there”.

Much love,
