I asked a question yesterday.
How much simpler would life be if we did what we said we would?
Like, every time.
Every single time.
The answer, of course, is “much”.
In theory it should be simple.
We decide to do something.
We do it.
Whether it be to do with our personal lives, work……….
Or getting fit / losing weight / improving our health.
Life, of course, isn’t that simple.
But, have we ever been taught how to do this?
Shown an approach to do this that maximises the chance of it happening?
The fact that we all struggle so much with it, would suggest not.
So over the next few days, I’m going to cover what I’ve learned about this.
After 16 years of doing this.
Doesn’t mean it’s a perfect or infallible approach.
But, hopefully, it will help.
##############
Setting Realistic Goals
Firstly, it’s the way we set our goals.
We go crazy.
We set a huge result.
Lose X amount of weight.
Earn Y amount of money.
Etc.
And, fine as those goals are as a final destination………
We kinda have to ‘fail’ every single day until we get there.
Every day we wake up and say “Have I lost X lbs?”.
And the answer, day after day, is “No”.
Until it’s “Yes”.
Or, more likely, until we get put off by all those perceived ‘Nos’.
And stop.
Process Goals
The way to get there is to set ‘process goals’.
The things we need to do to arrive at the destination.
Do X amount of workouts per week.
Eat well Y amount of times per week.
Keep our weekly total of calories under X.
And so on.
And we need to set it in a realistic way.
Realistically phrased for us.
Imagine that, when we set our intentions, not doing it just wasn’t an option.
What would the goal look like then?
We might like to think that we “should be able” to do “four workouts per week”.
But if we’ve struggled with that before (and been put off by that perceived failure)……..
Then is saying it again the best approach?
Rephrase the Goal
Might “do some sort of movement four times per week” work better?
If it can be ‘workouts’ that’s great.
If you genuinely can’t do that, you can do something else.
A walk.
Some press-ups or squats in front of the TV.
Eating ‘perfectly’ every single meal is next to impossible.
Sticking to a ‘weekly average’ is completely doable.
Setting a goal that can be achieved, whatever logistical challenges comes up.
Whatever “goes wrong”.
A goal that we know, that when it comes down to it, is only achieved……….
By our choice to do it or not.
It doesn’t mean we will definitely do it.
But when we know the achievement of the goal is only down to our own decisions……..
And is completely, 100% unrelated to any external influences………
We are waaaaaaaayyyyyyyyy more likely to achieve it.
Much love,
Jon ‘Own’ Hall and Matt ‘Posts’ Nicholson
