Who remembers The Millennium Bug?

AKA The Y2K Problem.

The concern, as we approached the year 2000, that computers with two digit years could cause a problem.

That they would, essentially, tick over from 99 to 00 and it would think it was the year 1900.

And planes would fall out of the sky, cash machines would start spitting money out, etc.

When we woke up on the 1st January 2000 (in my student house in Nottingham, pretty hungover in my case), it seemed nothing had happened.

A quick check of the relevant Wikipedia shows mostly minor problems (and a somewhat upsetting one about incorrectly calculating Downs Syndrome risk for 154 pregnant mothers in Sheffield).

Most people at the time then commented “See, there was nothing to worry about”.

Missing that the reason so little had gone wrong was that the problem had been mainly fixed.

Billions of pounds and countless man hours had gone into sorting it out in the run up to the day.

The lack of something happening can be seen as both proof that the process preceding it wasn’t needed………….

And confirmation that the process worked, dependant on how you look at it.

In the same way that I’ve seen the exact same data used as “proof” that COVID Lockdowns “weren’t needed” and that they “worked”.

And in the same way it’s not uncommon that for members at RISE to have people tell them “You don’t need to do all that exercise – you’re in great shape”.

Or “You don’t need to worry about what you’re eating – you don’t need to lose any weight”.

When it’s the regular exercise that’s got them (and keeps them) in shape.

And the better food choices (no “worrying”, just different choices) that’s got them to (and keeps them at) a weight they’re happy with.

Ultimately, no one really “needs” to do anything.

Most things are just choices.

And thinking otherwise can keep us stuck.

We just make decisions.

And the average of our decisions can either take us towards where we want to be…………..

Or take us away from where we want to be.

And it doesn’t need to be any more complicated than that!

Much love,

Jon ‘Chaleenium Willenium’ Hall

P.S. If you like the sound of an approach where you’re not “worrying” about better food choices and searching for “motivation” and “willpower” to go and exercises, but are just doing both, then you’ll find it here –> www.myrise.co.uk/apply
