The other week I took my two oldest sons to see Derren Brown’s new show at Stoke.
It was brilliant.
If you’re a Facebook friend of mine you may have seen that middle son Jamie and I ended up being involved in part of the show.
Me on stage with Derren.
Jamie stood at the back, spotlight pointed at him, microphone in his hand and a camera showing him about 30 foot high projected onto the screen at the back of the stage.
We then got to go backstage and have a chat with Derren afterwards which was cool.
I won’t tell you about the trick itself as we were asked not to.
I will tell you one little bit actually.
It won’t give anything away.
And it’s burned in my memory forever.
As part of the trick I had to write down the three things I loved most about Jamie and put them in a sealed envelope in my pocket.
And read them out later.
As I was about to read them, Derren spoke to Jamie.
“Remember this Jamie. Remember this for the rest of your life. Your Dad on stage, in front of 1,200 people telling you the things he loves the most about you”.
I could see him framed by the spotlight at the back.
And blown up on the giant screen.
It was quite an emotional moment as I read them out.
A Magic Moment.
Jamie told me later that it was one of the best nights of his life.
And he went to bed cuddling the giant bear we’d won as part of the trick.
Sometimes, that’s what life is about.
Magic Moments.
Those memories that really stand out.
That stay with us and those that were involved forever.
And the more of them we can create, the better life feels.
Some just happen organically.
Some we have to make happen.
Most we have to make happen.
And approaching life with a view to making these Magic Moments………
And then making a concerted effort to commit them to memory……..
Is a massive part of what can make life feel “good”.
The human brain is very good at immediately moving onto the next thing.
Writing stuff off as “expected behaviour”.
Or bunching it all together into a somewhat vague collection of moments.
“Great holiday”.
“Top weekend”.
And so on.
Training our brain to identify those Magic Moments…….
And to commit them to memory……..
Is a skill.
And, like, any skill, the more we do it, the better we get at it.
The more we concentrate on recognising what’s good in our life and those especially ‘magical’ bits………
The more readily we’ll see and remember them.
The more the “less good” bits will be put into context.
They’ll always be there.
The human brain will always be fine at noticing them.
It’s the opposite that we’ll benefit from practicing.
Much love,
Jon ‘When two hearts are carin’ Hall
P.S. Increasing energy and improving mood are two of the major things our guys get which helps them create more Magic Moments for them and the people in their lives. Get this for the rest of this year for free at www.myrise.co.uk/apply
