Anyone else got any ‘custom greetings’ that they’ve developed over lockdown?
A couple of weeks before, I was down in the London for a friend’s birthday and everyone was doing footshakes and the ‘Wuhan elbow’.
For the last couple of months, since we’ve been allowed, I’ve started seeing more and more of my side of the family (and other people).
From talking to them over the hedge, through to them coming in our house the other week through to us going away together for a week in Wales at the end of this month.
I still haven’t made any physical contact with most of them though.
My mum is in our ‘bubble’ so can have hugs and kisses.
The greetings for the rest of them vary person to person.
My sister gets an ‘air’ Wuhan elbow (we just point elbows from a metre or two away).
My Dad and I usually engage in some sort of pretend boxing match but one that would require Mr Tickle style arms.
My niece and I jump up and down waving at each other and grinning like maniacs.
And my nephew and I solemnly cross our arms over our chests, bow our heads and vow “Rwanda forever”.
It started as ‘Wakanda forever’ from the Black Panther / Marvel films (which I must admit, I’ve not seen, but he likes them).
And then he started wearing the new Arsenal kit after his birthday.
It had ‘Visit Rwanda’ on the sleeve.
Things like that tweak and evolve over time.
Silly names we have for the kids and each other that are fun for us but take such explaining to anyone else we don’t usually bother.
Old jokes with school friends that have been built, layer on layer, over hundreds of interactions.
These things evolve and stick.
Much like our eating habits.
We often can’t really remember the changes.
They happened gradually over years and decades.
No big, drastic changes.
Maybe ones “for the better” that we slowly slipped back away from.
And often, the changes we can make to take us back in that positive direction, don’t need to be massive.
Little tweaks that we can build on over time.
A few tactical swaps (usually stuff we find approximately equally enjoyable, filling and convenient, but is less calorie dense) here and there.
Smaller portion sizes that we don’t massively notice.
More still of that in a few days or weeks when that’s ‘bedded in’.
Like most things in our lives and been tweaked and refined over time…………
Successful, long term habit changes that will take us towards the body / health / fitness / energy levels that we desire is much the same.
Much love,
Jon ‘T’Challa’ Hall
P.S. It’s still nearly two weeks away, but why wait? Spaces on the September programme will go. They always do. Details and booking for the find out more meeting at myrise.co.uk/briefing-meeting.
