Think of a recent time where you felt you’d “failed”.
Won’t take long, I should imagine – such things jump readily to mind for all of us.
What happened?
I know I can’t hear you, but what was the definition of “success” that wasn’t met?
And who set that definition?
You?
A friend, family member, colleague, boss, client, etc?
Was there even a specific definition?
Because it’s always worth remembering that the metrics of success (and therefore, failure) are only ever set by us humans.
And, more often that we realise, we set them for ourselves.
And we can set different ones.
Ones that we stand a better chance of achieving and that will build confidence and momentum in us.
Rather than ones that probably won’t happen and will do the opposite.
We can change our success metric from “lose 3lbs this week” to “eat in an average deficit across the week” or “track our food whatever ends up happening”.
We can change our success metric from “cutting out snacks / carbs / sugar / processed food / take outs” to “eating snacks / carbs / sugar / processed food / take outs in calorie maintenance or deficit”.
We can change our success metric from “do 3 workouts this week” to “get through the door at least once”.
We can change our success metric from “drink more water” to “take a full bottle of water to work each day”.
We can change our success metric from “get more sleep” to “get in bed by 11pm during the week”.
We can change our success metric from “getting a yes” to “asking”.
We can change our success metric from “smashing that presentation” to “getting up to speak in front of others no matter how it goes”.
And so on.
More often than we realise, we set the metric for success.
Changing that metric is not a “lowering of standards”………….
It can be the exact opposite if it means we end up doing more over time.
