Last Friday evening we had our monthly social event.
Bowling at SuperBowl in Macclesfield.
There was 22 of us so we split over three lanes.
Two of my sons and I were on one lane and my wife and stepdaughter were on the next lane.
Just by coincidence her lane didn’t have the bumpers up but mine did.
She got a higher score than me on both games and took great delight in pointing out that the difference would have been even greater if I didn’t have the bumpers for a couple of shots that would have been gutter balls.
It’s a funny game! bowling.
The difference between a perfect shot and a terrible one is only a handful of degrees.
But, over distance, that slight variance in trajectory adds up to a different destination.
A plane from New York to London will only need to be a few degrees off course to land in Madrid.
The bumpers quickly corrected for that and put the ball back on course.
And we can choose to have similar bumpers in our life.
Our results won’t always come in a perfect straight line.
We won’t go straight from where we are now to where we’d like to be at a linear pace.
Sometimes we’ll veer of course a little bit.
And that’s okay.
That’s normal.
But having some definition of what “too far off course” looks like can stop us going even further in that direction than we have to.
A body weight that we’re not willing to go above.
A number of days we’re not willing to go without doing a workout.
Or a number of days in a row or in a month that are the maximum that we’ll allow ourselves to go a bit nuts with the food.
A total number of calories for the week, perhaps.
A figurative bumper that allows us to play and enjoy the game of life, but that shows us when we’re bearing too far off the direction we want to go in.
Much love,
Jon ‘7-10 split’ Hall
