The two phrases I see online with regards to caring about what other people think are;

1. “You shouldn’t care what people think”

2. “I don’t give a f*ck what anyone thinks”

When I see the latter I normally have two thoughts;

1. I’m pretty sure that’s not true. We wouldn’t feel the need to say it if it was and the level of emotion in that phrase suggests that they do.

2. It would be a real shame to not care what anyone thinks

If we genuinely did not care at all what our spouse, parents, family, friends, colleagues, employees, bosses, customers, etc thought, then I don’t think that’s a nice life to be living.

If I told my wife that I wasn’t happy with something in she told me she didn’t care what I thought that would be pretty upsetting.

Not caring at all shouldn’t be what we’re aiming for.

But again we could aim to be selective, skilful and intelligent with who’s opinion we care about and how we let that shape our actions.

If we set out with the intention of not going well anyone thinks we’ll probably end up caring about what people who don’t matter think (arguing with strangers on social media anyone?).

We can court and accept the opinion and feedback of others………

But then still have the decision over what we do with that.

It might shape what we do but it also might not.

And when it doesn’t we can explain why not.

Everybody feels heard and are happy.

Aiming to not care what anyone thinks is naïve and unnecessarily problem creating.

Been selective, skilful and intelligent with who’s opinions we care about and what we then choose to do with that is much more beneficial.
