I see a lot of memes and similar online listing things that “you shouldn’t do”.

They say “you should never compare yourself to others”.

That “you should never look backwards”.

And that “you shouldn’t care what people think”.

And I get the intention.

Avoiding those things can sound like a good idea.

But I would argue that that’s not the approach that would serve us best.

And by trying to not do them at all we often end up doing them badly.

It’s human nature.

What we can just do is choose to do them selectively.

Intelligently.

Skilfully.

Doing those things rather than, almost naively, trying to not do them at all.

And I’ll cover that in these next three blogs.

I’ll start with comparing ourselves to others.

I think it’s literally impossible to not do at all.

We spend the vast majority of our day with other people, or interacting with them or watching or listening to them.

It helps give us an understanding of what’s possible and that we can work towards and achieve.

It gives us context about all the different variables in life.

But I completely get that there are direct comparisons to specific people that might not serve as well.

That might make us feel rubbish about our own position and demotivate us.

But that doesn’t mean we couldn’t selectively pick useful comparisons where people who we consider to be similar to us are achieving things and look at how they do it and how we can replicate that.

We can learn from others and emulate what they’ve done to help us do what’s important to us.

Comparing ourselves to others isn’t “bad” if it’s done skilfully.

And, chances are, if we try to do it at all, then we’ll end up doing unskilfully.

Selective, intelligent, skilful selections of comparisons in order to help us make tactical changes and achieve what’s important to is they surely the best way?

Much love,

Jon ‘Filter’ Hall
