Who recognises the line?

I’m calling Jamie or Steve as first responders to this with the answer.

Both big Top Gun fans and regular blog readers.

In case that last line didn’t give it away, it’s a line from the 1986 classic film Top Gun.

Where the characters Maverick and Goose are being dressed down by ‘Stinger’ for their behaviour in training.

“Son, your ego is writing cheques your body can’t cash”

We’ve all done that though, haven’t we?

Thought ourselves capable of something that we were, perhaps, not.

Or that, at least, we were unlikely to do.

Constantly setting ourselves up for feelings of failure and disappointment by just returning to the same plan we struggled with before.

Or worse – setting an even harder one.

Not done the 3 workouts a week we would’ve liked for a while?

And decided that the answer is to go for 5 this week?

Not eaten in calorie maintenance for a while?

And decided that the answer is to go for a huge deficit?

Hoping that we’ll come good this time.

Setting expectations of ourselves that, let’s be honest, we’re unlikely to achieve.

Letting our ego getting in the way of setting ourselves up for success.

Then bruising it.

There’s massive value to the smaller, doable change……….

That we do then do………..

That we use to build confidence and momentum..

The single next workout.

The better food choice than we could / would have made.

Might not be as ‘sexy’ as the equivalent of eating like a nutritionist and training like an athlete.

But the smaller cheques that our body (and mind) can cash…………

Will always add up to more than the big ones our ego writes that we can’t (or don’t)!

Much love,

Jon ‘Googling this showed that the character Stinger has the real name of ‘Tom Jordan’ who is my brother in law. Was my brother in law. He will now be know as Stinger’ Hall
