I was driving back over from my Mum’s where we’d been for Sunday lunch yesterday afternoon with Alex, my girlfriend, and the kids.
Oli, my eldest, was asking every 30 seconds how long it was till we got home.
He knows how to tell the time, but we haven’t taught him yet how to work out how long there is left to a certain time.
So, I thought it made sense to teach him how to do that.
Spending a bit of extra time on that then would save time in the future when I wouldn’t have to constantly tell him how long it is till something was happening.
He resisted at first – “Why can’t you just tell me how long it is Daddy?”.
So I told him the whole ‘give a man a fish and you’ll feed him for one meal – teach him to fish and you’ll feed him forever’ story and explained the relevance to that situation.
He took it on board and by the time we got home he was counting down the minutes by himself.

It’s the same with healthy eating.
People often ask us “What should I eat?”
And “What foods should I avoid?”
Whilst we could just tell them that, we’d rather, over time, they learned the thought process, science and rationale behind what we believe and our approach.
[Tweet “We’d rather, over time, they learned the thought process, science and rationale behind what we believe and our approach”]
So they can then work it out themselves.
For the rest of their lives.
So they can work around their own unique circumstances.
And apply it to the different scenarios they will face.
Takes a little longer than a crash diet where you just get told what to do.
But it achieves LASTING results.
It helps the choices too.
Knowing what will happen in your body when you consume certain foods or do certain things, makes it an easier choice than just being told not to eat / do it.

You may have noticed that earlier on I referred to what we recommend as “what we believe in”.
Not that this is definitely right.
I’ll cover tomorrow why pretty much everything you’ll hear about changing your life and body is just opinion.
And how to select who’s opinion to listen to.
