It’s a fairly regular occurrence that newer members ask if we can give them a food plan.

“Just tell me what to eat and I’ll do it” they might say.

Unfortunately, that’s rarely the case.

If having a meal plan was the answer, they probably wouldn’t have joined us in the first place.

After all you can get one for free on t’internet.

Pop “1,000 calorie a day meal plans” in your Google Machine, follow it and I can guarantee that you’ll lose weight.

Many have said “Slimming World gave me a plan and it worked great while I followed it”.

Which it will.

Do Food Plans Work?

So, do food plans work? Plans work fine when the going is easy and we’re motivated to follow them.

But, for most, things fall apart over time.

They can’t follow the plan at some point (meal out, weekend away, etc) and feel they’ve “failed” or that they’ve “fallen off the wagon”.

Or they start to feel somewhat controlled by the plan.

And rebel.

Doesn’t mean it wouldn’t work.

Or that it doesn’t for some.

But, at the very least, if someone’s joined us, I’d say it’s not the approach for them.

##### The briefing meeting at RISE in Macclesfield is the next step if you’ve tried meal plans before and haven’t completely hit and then maintained your goal ######

Such approaches are very much “give man a fish and he’ll eat for a day”.

Do food plans work?

What we try and do is much more “Teach him to fish”.

Teach him (or her, of course) the implications of different ways of eating, what works and why.

Have a system to create their own meal plans in line with their preferences and current circumstances.

Have a way to track if what they’re doing fits in with what works.

And to help them question habits, mindsets and self limiting beliefs around food that might be holding them back.

More to start with then a food plan, sure.

Like learning to fish is more than being given a fish.

But, from our experience, the better way.

Being given a fish (meal plan) may work for some long term (not me).

But for those that it doesn’t, we’ll stick to teaching them to fish.

Much love,

Jon ‘What do you call a fish with no eyes?’ Hall and Mat ‘Fsh’ Nicholson

P.S. Doesn’t work quite as well written down that, does it?
