I was listening to a podcast the other day.
And a number of interesting points jumped out at me.
At one point they were talking about creating culture within a business.
And how the actions of those in charge shape that culture more than their words.
People are more likely to be influenced by what they see happening than what they’re told.
An example was given of a boss who the interviewee had seen give a presentation to their company about “the importance of honesty”………
And then, minutes later when their secretary received a call that they didn’t want to take at that point, respond with……..
“Tell him I’m in a meeting”
A small lie, sure.
But a lie nonetheless.
The examples of lying that the staff had seen from management creating a culture of lying that couldn’t be undone by mere words.
And it’s powerful to realise that our actions will shape the behaviours of those around us more than what we say to them will.
If we tell our friends that we’re “on a diet” and we’re “not drinking or snacking”………..
But then take the snack or have the drink after that person has mentioned it five times………
Then we’re just teaching them that we need to be asked five times.
If people telling us that we’re “boring” or “no fun anymore” leads to us eating or drinking the thing they want us to eat or drink……..
Then we’re just teaching them that they need to say that we’re “boring” and “no fun anymore”.
If we say we “don’t want all that chocolate and snacks in the house” but then eat it when our other half gets it in………
Then we’re just teaching them that we really want is for them to get it in irrespective of what we say.
We can’t, of course, control what other people do.
But if our actions are showing them that we want them to do the opposite of what we’re saying………
Making our words and actions in line with each other will make them doing what we’d like them to do much more likely.

Much love,
