Imagine your friend was trying to spend less money.

Maybe they’d got some debt they wanted to pay off.

Let’s say, for round numbers sake, they earn £100 a day.

To repay the debt at the rate they’re happy with, they want to just spend £70 a day.

They suggest some ideas they’ve got to you.

They’re following a system where everything they spend money on is given a points value.

Where a point is equivalent to £3.

And anything under £1 is considered “free”

Or they’ve figured out a number of things they could buy that cost £20 so they can have three of them a day and have a tenner spare.

What would you say?

I guess you’d say something like “Why add those extra steps in?”

“You already know how much stuff costs. Why not just track your spending and keep it under budget?”

I’m sure you’ve seen the parallel coming.

Changes to the way we eat.

There are many methods we can choose from.

But all just look to create a calorie deficit (if weight loss is our goal).

So all they, essentially, do is add an extra step in.

If we can find the points value of something we can definitely find the calorie value.

Not necessarily the other way around.

All packaged foods have a calorie number printed on them

None packaged food can quickly be looked up on a tracking app.

Again, not necessarily that easy for points or similar methods.

Even more complicated to track meals are, at most, equally complicated to find the value of compared to points or other systems.

Potentially less complicated.

We wouldn’t add an extra step when looking to spend less money – we already have the numbers to work with.

Why do the same with our food intake?
