I’ve mentioned several times recently about experiences I’ve had at other gyms and facilities similar to ours over the years.

 

And how often they remind me why people struggle with fitness, weight loss, etc.

 

As the efforts of those employed to help them often set them up for failure.

 

I was at one place recently.

 

Just finished a workout and was having a drink.

 

A new member approaches the owner near me and says “I have a question”.

 

Nosey as I am, my ears pricked up.

 

“It’s about the banned list” she began, holding up what appeared to be a booklet that new members get.

 

“I just wanted to know why some of these things are banned” she continued.

 

My first assumption was that the reply from the owner would be something like “Well, they’re not banned. We don’t believe in banning food as, psychologically, it’s not a way to approach it that works for most people. But there are ways of eating that will get you better results if you’d like to have a look at that”

 

Before, maybe, exploring what she’d done in the past, things she found difficult, etc.

 

But, as you may have guessed, he went through the list of foods with her and ‘explained’ why they are ‘banned’.

 

If I were a gambling man I would put money on her not eating those foods for a week at most.

 

Before rebelling against the ‘ban’.

 

Because that’s what we, as a species, do.

 

It’s the ABC of our basic physiological needs.

 

Autonomy – Belonging – Competence.

 

Autonomy – the feeling that we are the masters of our own destiny and that we are making decisions of our own accord that we see value in and that tie into our beliefs

 

Being ‘told’ what to do thwarts our autonomy.

 

Makes us do the opposite, in time.

 

That’s why we never tell you what to do.

 

I wouldn’t dream of it anyway.

 

But I know it would make you do the opposite.

 

Instead we may help pose questions and provoke thoughts……….

 

That may lead to you changing an opinion, a belief or a habit……..

 

Which may lead to you then readily doing the things that need to be done to get the goal you desire.

 

Because you see the value in that decision.

 

Because you know you’re making it of your own accord.

 

Because you want to.

 

Not because you’ve been told to.

 

Or because something’s on a ‘banned list’.
