On Saturday I talked about the one time in my life that someone accused me of being racist.
In second paragraph I said I would come back in a few days and talk about the danger of considering ourselves “not racist”.
It’s a little realisation that I came to a few years ago.
I was thinking about how when people say something that I might consider to be racist, they often precede the sentence with ” I’m not racist but……”.
And I started thinking about how we all have our own definition of what we do and don’t consider to be racist.
And that if we consider ourselves to be “not racist” then what we have done is come up with a very specific definition of what we consider to be racist or not and decided that we fall on the “right side” of that line.
And there’s danger in that.
We stop questioning our thoughts and actions.
As we perhaps do any time we put a label on ourselves.
We decide that we’re “busy” and stop questioning how we’re assigning our time.
We consider ourselves to be “big boned” or having a “bad metabolism” and stop questioning how much we’re eating.
We think we’re “not clever enough” or “good enough” and don’t then take the steps we can take to make the progress that we can.
Labels have their places.
On kids’ clothing is the best one.
Elsewhere they can hold us back.
Shape our decisions, behaviours and results.
And not always in a good way.
Questioning them and approaching things with a degree of “innocence”……..
Can help lead us to making the decisions that actually serve us better.
Much love,
Jon ‘Smoothie’ Hall
P.S. Our programme is specifically designed for busy people and to make the best use of that finite resource of time. There’s only one way for someone to find out if they really are “too busy” for it and that’s to give the trial a go. Find you genuinely are “too busy” (but don’t just drop out and do nothing when some of the things take seconds) and you’re covered by the Money Back Guarantee —> www.myrise.co.uk/apply.
