Thinking about 25 years ago (yesterday), I remember having a little mental checklist of things I needed to get before leaving the house.Wallet, watch, keys, phone.

I stopped wearing a watch many years ago though.

And I hardly ever take my wallet any more.

Google Pay on my phone is fine for the vast majority of transactions I do.

It’ll probably be a few years, but the keys’ days are numbered too.

At some point, my phone or some form of biometrics will probably start my car and get me into most places.

And will we even have a phone in the end?

Maybe ye olde chip-in-the-brain?

The world is, of course, changing.

But the fundamentals still apply.

I still have on me a way to tell the time, to pay for stuff, get into things and to contact and interact with other people.

It’s the same with food.

The world of food we live in is very different to that of our great grandparents.

Walk around a supermarket today and a huge amount of what’s on the shelves would have been completely unfamiliar to our great-grandparents.

But the fundamentals still apply.

The added complexities don’t change the fact that our bodies still need enough energy to function.

But not too much.

Plus enough proteins, fats, carbs, vitamins, minerals, etc.

Weight loss still boils down to being in a calorie deficit.

Getting enough of the other things will maintain or improve health and probably make that deficit more doable.

My watch disappeared; telling the time didn’t.

The wallet has largely gone; paying for things isn’t.

Keys may disappear; getting into things won’t.

Foods change; what our bodies fundamentally need doesn’t.

Much love,

Jon ‘Manic Street Preachers’ Hall
