You remember the song?

By Yazz I thought.

But, as a quick google has just taught me, it was originally release by a guy called Otis Clay eight years earlier.

Either way, it wasn’t Yazoo as David Brent famously misquoted in “The Quiz”.

—————— Dated reference overload. Must. Return. To. Modern. Day. —————-

So, Yazz (and The Plastic People) famously sang

“The only way is up, baby
For you and me now”

repeatedly.

And I was reminded of this recently.

We’ve mentioned before about all the sessions and exercises we do being on a continuum (such as in the other week’s “How do you get out of bed then?” blog – myrise.co.uk/how-do-you-get-out-of-bed-then).

For us, good session design starts with creating a session that absolutely anyone can do, completely irrespective of fitness levels, injuries, training experience, etc.

And then finding a way that anyone can scale it up appropriately so that it can be suitably effective for anyone.

Last month I made the mistake of designing the Monday session in a way that it was quite hard, but could be scaled ‘downwards’ accordingly.

It didn’t go down as well with the members.

Some felt they “couldn’t do it”.

My bad!

Lesson learned and a useful reminder.

Won’t happen again.

But, in my marginal defence, that’s what the vast majority of this industry do all the time.

Create mega hard, quite scary looking workouts.

And tell people “you can have a little rest of go lighter than the proper weight if you need to”.

Which, unsurprisingly, is rather demotivating to the a high proportion of people.

Other than one session for one month out of the last 84 (we’re seven years old next week), we’ve always subscribed to “the only way is up”.

The market for “This is the set workout and you can make it easier if you want, I suppose” is beyond flooded nowadays.

Sessions everyone can do but that anyone can make appropriately challenging is our M.O.

————— If you, or a friend, like the sound of that, the find out more meeting for the September programme is TONIGHT now. One of the best times of year to start, why ‘leave it’ for another month or more? No salesly stuff, no pressure, just find out about the sessions, the supports systems, the fantastic, supportive atmosphere and more. Details and booking at myrise.co.uk/briefing-meeting ———-

Much love,
