I talked yesterday about one probable reason why we might struggle to be “consistent”.

We don’t have an actual plan to be consistent to.

There’s another reason that’s pretty likely too.

The thing that you’re struggling with……….

You just don’t want to do it.

And that’s fine.

No point pretending otherwise, if that’s the case.

All the “shoulds”, “ought tos” and “need tos” in the world won’t help.

We only need “willpower” for stuff we don’t want to do.

Motivation is wanting to do something.

When we don’t feel motivated to do it, we don’t want to do it.

And, again, pretending otherwise, just makes changing that all the more difficult.

In this situation, we’ve got two variables we can play with.

Or, more likely, a mixture of the two.

1. What we actually do

2. How we choose to view what we are doing

We often get caught up in wanting the “best way”.

The fastest results.

And, whilst that’s nice in theory, if you don’t fancy that process (I know I don’t) then it’s pointless.

A knowingly sub-optimal and done approach……..

Always, always, always……….

Beats theoretically perfect and not done.

You don’t want to cut out all your favourite foods and eat like a monk?

That’s fine.

Just eat like you are now, but in a calorie deficit.

Or make some tactical swaps to maintain fullness and enjoyment whilst reducing average calorie density.

Find a form of exercise you’re ok with.

Even it someone tells you their way is “better”.

Don’t want to stop drinking alcohol?

Make some tactical swaps in what you drink and / or adjust elsewhere so you’re still in a deficit.

This approach might not get you in The Olympics, sure.

But if you do it, it’s a better fit for you.

And, we can just choose to reframe some things.

Don’t like the sounds of “exercise”?

How does “going for a workout with friends” sound?

“Diet” fill you with dread?

How about “just paying a bit more attention to what I put in my mouth because of how it makes me look and feel”?

“Going to bed early” sound rubbish?

How about “getting enough sleep so I feel better tomorrow”?

And so on.

If you’re struggling to be consistent to something, there’s a pretty good chance it’s something you don’t want to do.

Some combination of changing the thing and / or how you view and describe it, might just change that.

Much love,
