Following the success of Back to the Future in 1985, Michael J Fox’s next two big films were Teen Wolf and The Secret of my Success.

Having just read the Wikipedia synopsis of the latter film, I’m not sure that I’ve ever actually seen it.

But I think of it’s every time I do a quarterly review as part of the coaching programme that I am on.

In our review, we look at what went well in that quarter as well as what we didn’t make happen.

And we look at the reasons behind both of these things.

The question my coach often asks about what went well is “What’s the common theme between all the things that went well? What’s the secret to your success?”

And, time and time again, it’s the same for most of us.

The stuff that went well and we achieved was stuff that we;

– Planned

– Broke down the constituent steps

– Scheduled

– Booked things in

The stuff that didn’t happen is often the opposite.

We just tried to “fit it in” at some point.

Or “just do it”.

No real plan.

And I’d wager it’s the same for everyone.

Tell me which of these you think is more likely to happen if our intent is to lose weight and get fitter;

“I’m going to eat better and exercise more”

vs.

“I’m going to track my food to a total of 10,000 calories a week. I’ve scheduled a time on a Sunday evening to plan most of that week’s food and do a Click & Collect. I’ve scheduled my workouts for X DAYS at Y TIMES and have that booked out in my diary and the buy in of those that affect my availability arranged”.

Or how about these two for family stuff;

“I’m going to spend more time with the kids”.

vs.

“I will spend a minimum of one hour 1:1 each week with each of the kids. I’ll plan that on a Sunday evening. We will do X amount of Y activities. I have scheduled in my diary when to book those things / when tickets are released / when I need to make those arrangements”

Maybe a plan to get a promotion;

“I’m going to work harder”

vs.

“I’m going to ask my boss “What do you need to see from me between now and DATE to mean I get promoted?” Then schedule any learning time, book courses, make plans for how to deliver that, etc”

And so on.

If, like me and most people, the stuff that goes well has been more planned and scheduled……..

And the stuff that doesn’t……..

Hasn’t……..

Then maybe that’s the ‘secret to your success’ that can be replicated elsewhere?

Much love,
