In yesterday’s blog I referenced the fact that I told my mate that he needs to hit rock bottom ASAP.
It was, of course, a joke.
And no one needs to hit rock bottom.
Sometimes we might tell ourselves that we do.
As a justification for continuing with behaviour we know isn’t serving us and we’ll need to change at some point.
But what does rock bottom actually mean?
One person’s rock bottom could be someone else’s average.
And, unless we’re looking back in the future at the point we were arguably at our lowest……..
We never know when rock bottom is.
For every time that we’ve told ourselves “Right, that’s it – I need to change”……….
I reckon we’ll have had plenty more times where we then didn’t change (at least long term) than when we did.
I blame the movies for how we sometimes feel things have to be.
Everything feels like it needs to be a big, momentous moment.
Emotional music playing in the background.
Something that we know at the time will be life changing.
A voiceover in the background confirming that “life will never be the same”.
In reality, the overwhelming majority of our progress comes from the little innocuous decisions that seem practically irrelevant at the time.
Just little choices around better eating and exercise (or whatever else) taken today.
We don’t need to hit rock bottom.
You don’t need any changes to be the great big thing that they sometimes can feel like they are.
We just need to make some better decisions.
Enough that, on average, takes us in the direction that we want to go in over time (that will be way more likely with proven – nationally recognised – support and whilst surrounded by like minded people on the same journey –> www.myrise.co.uk/apply)
Much love,
