Approaching two years ago the family and I bought a dog.
We went to see the puppy litter when they were very small and made our choice.
After much inter-family negotiation we selected one and a mint green collar was placed around her neck.
For a little while she was then going to he called Minty.
But we settled on Jessie.
When collecting Jessie we received some of the worst advice we have ever got.
We asked the breeder about dog training classes.
“You don’t need lessons” he began.
“You can learn it all off YouTube”.
Whilst I’m sure he’s right and that some people have trained their dog to a high standard using free YouTube videos……..
We didn’t.
Simple as that.
We wasted those integral first few months training her to a degree, but not enough to get the results we desired.
We then started lessons which were interrupted by COVID.
And we haven’t got round to restarting after the last lockdown.
Her behaviour is reasonable now.
But it’s hardly amazing for getting on for two years worth of effort.
We would’ve made so much quicker progress (and saved much frustration) by getting expert help from the beginning.
Like we would in many areas of life.
It always makes me sad when people don’t start with us (or do a bit, then stop) with the intention to “have a go myself”.
After nearly 20 years in the Fitness Industry I don’t know if I’ve ever seen anyone that’s got better results that way.
It’s the slow, hard way versus the fast, easy way.
Or, at the very least, faster and easier.
If all people needed was to know how to do some workouts, then that might work.
A couple of months with us and they’d learn some.
Or they’ve been able to get them for free on YouTube for 15 years.
Much like dog training.
What a dog training course and our programme brings is a set appointment that we’re expected for.
That we can still cancel, of course.
But that we’re way more likely to do than just “do some training” or “go to the gym” at some point.
It brings the focussed support of an expert who’s helped many people like us achieve the results we desire.
The accountability.
The support systems.
The being in a group of like minded people on the same journey.
The conditions and environment that maximise the growth and maintenance of motivation (we can’t create it, but we can make it more likely).
I regret not starting dog training lessons earlier and being more consistent with them.
The results we have now would’ve been arrived at much sooner and we’d be even further on.
Don’t make that same mistake!
Much love,
