During the Second World War a bunch of engineer dudes were given a task.
Analyse planes that had been shot to see where they were getting hit the most.
And, therefore, where they would benefit from being reinforced.
They couldn’t reinforce the whole plane as it would make it too heavy.
The initial data came back suggesting that the wings be reinforced.
After all, that was where by far the highest number of bullet holes were on the planes they analysed.
There were next to none on the fuselage and cockpit.
So those bits were, obviously, ok.
Thankfully, some other dude took a look at the data before they did anything with it.
Turns out that the wings didn’t need reinforcing.
And the fuselage and cockpit did.
The opposite of what was initially thought.
Why?
Because the only planes they could assess were……..
The ones that came back..
Take some bullets in the fuselage and cockpit and you ain’t coming home.
Take it in the wing and you stand a reasonable chance of getting back.
So, in this case, the key wasn’t so much using the information they had.
But recognising the information they didn’t have.
And that, often, is the key to finding a workable solution.
People often assume when they first meet us that they need more of the ‘what’.
What exercises to do, what food to eat, etc.
But that’s often the information they already have.
To a reasonable degree at least.
If someone says they can help you to get in shape just by telling you what to do……..
Then run a mile!
Everyone already knows enough to get in reasonable shape.
And if you’re not where you’d like to be, is more information alone the answer?
The information people don’t have…….
And often don’t even realise is relevant…….
Is the ‘how’.
And the ‘why’.
Get the and the doing of the ‘what’ becomes relatively easy.
Finding out ‘how’ to include the ‘what’ into our already busy, challenging and, often, stressful lives is key.
And getting clear on our ‘why’……..
Our deep routed reason for wanting to do this…….
The real reason we desire change, rather than the more socially acceptable version society has taught us to express.
If you don’t already know your ‘Why’………
Then keep asking yourself ‘”Why?”
Like an annoying child.
Until you run out of answers.
And keep that ‘Why’ at the forefront of your mind when faced with the things that may take you away from that (crappy food, etc).
And, as for the ‘How’………
It’s all about working harder.
Simplifying life as much as possible.
Not easy, sure.
But, from our, experience, the only way.
Just adding more ‘stuff’ to do will only work as long as willpower lasts.
