I mentioned yesterday that, over the last few years, it’s been easy to think that “no one’s following the rules”.

And whilst plenty haven’t at times and some haven’t at all, a fairer description might be “the rules have been followed most of the time”.

With masks particularly, it’s tempting to think “there’s no point in wearing masks if they’re not going to” when others aren’t.

But, an argument could be that there’s even more point, if that’s the case.

If everyone was wearing them all the time then us not wearing them would make a one in however many millionth percent difference.

If half the number of people wore them, there’s an argument to be made that us not wearing them would make twice the difference.

If only one other person in the country did it, us doing it as well would double the total benefit (whatever that was) of mask wearing.

A reason for not doing something can often be reframed to a reason for doing it.

Like we could choose eating more than we need to or intended to……….

As a reason to carry on eating too much.

Because “I’ve failed” and “might as well write it off” and “start again next week”.

Or we could see it as a reason for eating a bit less elsewhere, to help average it out.

We could see being really busy and stressed as a reason to not exercise.

Or we could see it as a reason to exercise because of how it helps us deal with those challenges.

We could see health issues and injuries as a reason not to eat well and exercise.

Or we could see it as reasons to do exactly that for how it helps those things.

We could see feeling run down and stressed as a reason to stay up later binge watching tele.

Or we can see it as a reason to get more sleep.

Ultimately, we can create justifications for our choices in any way we wish.

But knowing that the opposite can be just as true can be a powerful way to help us make more of the decisions that lead us in the direction that we want to go.

Much love,

Jon ‘Mobile Armored Strike Kommand’ Hall

P.S. If feeling “too busy” or “haven’t got enough energy” or “not feeling up to” feel like reasons to not get cracking with us……. there’s an argument to be made that they are the exact reasons to get involved.
