For three years up to this summer I coached my middle son’s rugby team every Sunday morning.

I’m still not entirely sure how I ended up with that gig, to be honest.

No one else willing to do it I suppose.

They were all only 5 or 6 when I started with them.

Took some controlling, I’m sure you can imagine.

They all just wanted to ‘play’.

To run, score tries, kick the ball and so on.

And we’d always finish with a game.

But the bulk of the session was drilling the basics.

Breaking things down and doing them over and over until we got better at them.

Holding back on some of the more ‘advanced stuff’ they’d seen on TV as I wanted them to get the hang of the skills that underpinned that.

And I drilled in to them the value of doing this.

Over time they became really good at this.

And their playing game improved immeasurably.

Although there’s no official score keeping in matches at that age, they kept count.

And I think they only ‘lost’ a couple of games in those three years.

It’s human nature to want to do the more ‘advanced stuff’.

And that can have value.

But success in many things often just comes from mastering (or, at least, building on) the basics.

And doing them over and over and over.

It’s the same with our eating and exercise.

People often want the ‘best’ way to do it.

But often that ‘best’ is too big a jump from where they are now to be the answer for them.

The best, long term, results will come from that mastering of the basics.

Getting in the habit of turning up for a sessions three times a week (or doing a home workout on the app when you can’t).

Of maintaining an average calorie deficit (or maintenance balance).

Then, perhaps, looking at getting enough protein, vitamins, minerals, etc.

And, maybe one day, needing to consider nutrient timing, protein synthesis, nitrogen balance, glycogen replenishment, anabolic windows and other such terms many FitPros bandy about to show how much they know.

Maybe.

Master the basics.

Don’t worry about the stuff that may give you that extra one percent.

Get your big wins in and make them habits over time (clicking this link has been one of the biggest wins many of our success stories have ever done –> myrise.co.uk/briefing-meeting).

Like Jonny Wilkinson practiced the same kicks over and over and over again, even on Christmas Day, leading to that fateful day 15 years ago………..

The basics will get you further than all the advanced techniques put together.

Much love,
