For one of the presents we got our kids for Christmas, I wrote them a book.
It’s called ‘The Fantastic Five’.
Staring Oli The Otter, Isabel The Impala, Jamie The Jaguar and Charlie The Camel.
And Jessie (The Dog).
Originally it was Oli The Octopus and Jamie The Jellyfish.
But I couldn’t make the whole land-sea dynamic work.
Which was annoying as I’d already written what I think could’ve been one of the greatest lines of modern literature:
“And Jamie The Jellyfish
Who liked to tickle and belly-squish”
Anyway, I wrote it, designed the images and layout and had four copies printed in proper hardback.
When I opened them up a couple of days before Christmas my heart sank.
It was designed so that each pair of pages would make a two page spread image.
Ie: Page 1 to the left, Page 2 to the right, with one image across both pages and so on.
But it had Page 1 first on the right.
Then pages 2 and 3 opposite each other.
And so on.
Whilst I realised I could’ve foreseen this and designed accordingly………..
I also felt that the printers had some level of responsibility.
I didn’t feel it was made clear on their site that this was the case.
And I felt that when they’d seen the artwork, it should’ve been really obvious what my intention was.
I didn’t expect then to reprint for free or anything.
But thought there was definitely some shared ownership of responsibility there.
So I emailed them.
They rang me back and, very patiently, explained the measures they take to make people aware of this, and other considerations.
And sent me over a link to show where I’d had to go through artwork specification guidelines.
And tick to say I’d understood them.
It was super clear.
Couldn’t have been any clearer really.
I just hadn’t read it properly.
Skimmed it I should imagine.
Looking only for what I thought I needed (sizes and page edge ‘bleed’).
Only got myself to blame.
It’s human nature that.
To make a mistake………
And want to attribute some or all of the blame elsewhere.
We get that.
We can be as guilty as the next person.
It’s a fairly regular occurrence that we have a member who’s been coming for a month or two……….
Who says they’re confused about something or something isn’t clear.
We ask them if they’ve checked the Phase material on the site / app and they say “Yes”.
We check and, while they’ve looked at it, they haven’t completed it.
Some modules not accessed at all.
Some viewed but not finished off.
We get it.
It’s tempting to scan through and try and pick out what we think we need.
But there’s that danger that we miss the things we didn’t know we needed to know.
Or thought we knew but were, perhaps, not quite right about.
We appreciate checking that Phase stuff takes time.
But probably about the same time, overall, as a single workout.
And it’s broken down into bite size chunks.
And it definitely gives waaaayyyyy more benefit that a single workout ever could.
So, if you’re a member and haven’t completed the relevant Phase material, pop to that Phases tab on the app and have a look.
Don’t make the equivalent mistake of me having to waste another 80% of the print cost (they, very kindly, agreed to re-do it at cost price).
