The other week my youngest son was going a bit “bannana” (Pat Patterson reference anyone?).

Running around looking a bit wired.

“He’s high on sugar from those sweets he had earlier” my wife said.

I’m sure we’ve all been there.

Seen kids going wild at a party.

“It’s all those e-numbers and sugar”.

Sounds kinda obvious.

As with a lot of things that “sound kinda obvious”, the research doesn’t back it up.

In double blind experiments where some kids are given stuff with loads of sugar in…………..

And other kids are given stuff with no sugar in (but that the kids and parents think there is)…………

Then parental assessment of their children’s behaviour is the same.

The actual sugar makes no difference.

At least to how the parent’s feel the children are behaving.

That seems to suggest that kids just go wild at parties (or elsewhere when sufficiently excited).

Rather than wild at parties because of the sugar.

But it really easy for parents (and all humans) to interpret what they’re seeing as confirmation of their belief.

And to completely miss the stuff that refutes those beliefs.

The strength of those beliefs growing over time as we appear to see more and more “proof” of it.

I know that, despite the research showing otherwise, there’ll be parents reading this and saying “they’re definitely worse when they’re full of sugar”.

We do this all the time.

I’ve had many conversations over the last couple of years with people who’ve taken the same C0V1D (I recently found out that emails are more likely to go to junkmail with that ‘C word’ in) related developments as confirmation of their opposing views.

The same thing being seen as both proof that the restrictions were working and as proof that the restrictions weren’t needed.

We are far better than we’d Iike to accept at cherry picking what we listen to and accept.

We’re far less open to changing our minds than we tell ourselves we are.

But, we’ve been wrong before.

Or come to find a “better right” at least.

So can it really be after all this time on earth, now is the time where we’re finally right about everything?

We’ll look back in years to come and things we’re doing now and think “what was I doing?”.

We know this, yeah?

So why wait years?

When we’d keep getting it “wrong” (or “less right”).

What would those changes be?

Those realisations?

Those “aha moments”?

If future us is happy with their body, energy levels and mood, then what changed between now and then?

And can we just make that change now?

Much love,

Jon ‘To the moon’ Hall
