I see the same post on Facebook semi-regularly.
Asking people some variation of “What was a fact taught to you at school that has since been disproven?”
Some are genuine answers.
Pluto being a planet (it’s since been downgraded) or Christopher Columbus discovering America (he went to Central and South America but never North and, even then, was colonising rather than ‘discovering’ as people were already there).
But many are subtle digs at either the difference between what they felt they were promised in life at school and what’s actually happened to them……….
Or at general changes in society since they were at school.
One that gets mentioned a lot is “If you work hard, you’ll be successful”.
And I see where people are coming from.
They’ll feel that they have worked hard but success has not been automatically forthcoming.
But I can guarantee one thing in all of these situations……….
If, all else been equal, they’d work less hard than they have……..
They’d have been less successful than they have been.
It can be easy to essentially miss the benefits of the hard work that we have put in.
To take them for granted to some degree.
Like it can be with the work we put into our body, health and fitness.
It can be tempting to think “What’s the point?” when the efforts we have made have still led us to a body we’re not completely happy with.
Forgetting that we will be even worse off without those efforts.
Without all the exercise that we have done and the better food choices that we have made, our body would be fatter and less energetic than it is now.
All of our better choices add up to better progress.
Even if that progress isn’t what we would ideally like.
Never forget that.
