The following is a (not exhaustive) list of things you CAN do and lose weight:

Get take out
Eat out
Drink alcohol
Eat breakfast
Don’t eat breakfast
Skip meals (now known as ‘fasting’)
Eat three square meals a day
Eat several smaller meals
Snack
Eat cake, biscuits, chocolate, ice cream, etc
Go on holiday
Have Christmas
Go all inclusive

The following is a (not exhaustive) list of things you CAN’T do and lose weight:

Eat in a calorie surplus

Now this, of course, doesn’t mean you can do unlimited amounts of the first list.

This isn’t carte blanche to go nuts on them.

But, perhaps, it might question that belief that, as soon as some of those things happen (or don’t) then that means that we’ve “failed”.

That we should ‘write off’ the rest of the day / weekend / week / month.

Every single one of them is something we can make work as part of an average.

And average that doesn’t cause the second list to happen.

Is there more to optimum healthy eating than just calorie maintenance or deficit?

Of course.

Is a sub-optimal approach we actually do going to beat, hands down, an optimal one that we don’t?

Every time!
