Do you know what I realised the other day?

That, for the first time in my life, I am the possessor of three pairs of glasses.

With the plan I have with my optician, I get a free pair every few years.

In years gone by, by that time my current pair was on it’s last legs.

So I might have two for a while, but they never lasted long enough to have three at a time.

Or I’d lose a pair along the way.

While we’re at it, I’ve noticed that my bank cards now always make their expiry date.

Never used to be the case.

I’d have lost my wallet at some point along the way.

Something’s clearly changed in my habits.

Without me really realising it.

I must pay a bit more attention to where I put my things.

I only have to look at how two of my kids leave a trail of stuff across the floor from the front door to their beds to see that looking after our stuff well is a learned skill for most.

Looking after my stuff better has become a habit.

And like most habits, it’s really hard to tell where that “tipping point” came.

Some people will tell you that it takes 28 or 56 days.

But I’ll dispute that.

I went that long without losing my glasses or wallet many, many times.

But it happened again.

I’ve worked out 5 times a week for months many times over the years.

But then missed a few and took a while to get fully back to it.

Same with eating.

All I can tell you is that there’s no ‘magic number’.

It’s person and situation specific, at best.

And even then, habits are fluid, not set.

What I can tell you though is the more you do it, the easier it gets.

Maybe not a habit as such.

But it gets easier.

But only by doing.

Much love,

Jon ‘8 eyes’ Hall
