I did a blog the other day.

“Too many questions”.

I’m sure you remember it word for word.

This is the follow up.

Hence the matching title.


Between my mum (primary school teacher at the time) and Mr Smith (or Bog Face as we called him)………………..

I had the ‘proper’ use of “can” and “may” drilled in to me.

When people say “Can I XYZ?” I hear “It is psychically possible for XYZ to happen?”

“May I XYZ?” means “Is it ok if I XYZ?”

When any of my classmates would ask “Can I go to the toilet?” he would always respond with “I don’t know. Are you able to go to the toilet?” to looks of confusion.

He was, of course, looking for “Please may I go to the toilet?”

My wife recently pointed out that my continued interpretation of “can” in that way, whilst no one else does, isn’t really helping me.

When the kids ask “Can I have some pudding?” or “Can we go to the park?” or “Can I have that?” I’d find myself answering with “Well, we can, but……” and giving the reason why we weren’t going to.

This often lead to them asking the same question again.

As I had started with “We can” and it now wasn’t happening.

They hadn’t listened to the end.

It was “too much answer”.

Since I’ve realised this, I’ve changed to a straight “No” (or “Yes”, if appropriate).

With an explanation if necessary or requested (or, in many cases, a suggestion that they already know why not or can figure it out themselves).

My answer was, technically, perfectly fine.

But it wasn’t leading to the desired response.

It’s a bit like how we’ve simplified our core message over the years.

For weight loss it’s “calorie deficit”.

Maybe then look to get plenty of vitamins, protein, etc.

You might find it easier to create said deficit from a majority of relatively fresh, natural foods.

But, “calorie deficit” is the core answer.

We used to give much longer answers.

With lots of other stuff in.

Which, while all technically correct, meant people would often miss the core point.

It was “too much answer”.

And, whilst it worked for some…………

Others would end up doing nothing as they felt overwhelmed and confused.

Not really sure where to start.

Less if often more.

The simpler the answer that works the better in most cases (it’s less than three weeks to the next find out more meeting if you’re looking for a simple, but effective ‘answer’ –> myrise.co.uk/briefing-meeting).

More can be added over time if needed.

But ‘too much’ answer is never the answer.
