It’s not uncommon that when I ask people what they think they need in order to achieve the results they desire…….
That they reply with “More willpower”.
Seems to make sense on the face of it, doesn’t it?
But if the success rate of those who approach this with a view to needing willpower has taught me anything……..
It’s that……….
That’s not going to work.
Willpower is needed………..
For things that we don’t want to do.
At least in the way we perceive them at that point.
We don’t need willpower to watch our favourite programmes, spend time with our favourite people or to do stuff that we enjoy doing, do we?
If anything, the approach that will get us the results we desire……….
Is one that requires less willpower.
Whether that be from changing the things that we intend to do.
Or from questioning the way we perceive and describe what needs to be done.
Change the behaviour and / or change your perception of the behaviour.
If eating like a nutritionist or an athlete feels too much then we can eat in a way we’re ok with but in calorie deficit or maintenance.
If grinding out runs or boring workouts in a gym isn’t our cup of tea, three fun Sessions a week at RISE is more likely to happen (and more effective).
We can reframe exercise from “punishment for eating too much” to “something that makes me feel better”.
We can think of changes to our eating not as restriction and “cutting out” but as fuelling ourselves in a way that gives us more energy and improves how our body looks and feels.
Ultimately, if our whole plan relies on willpower…..
Experience has taught us……….
That’s probably not going to happen.
If your plan requires you to win an argument with yourself every day, change the plan (and that’s what we’ll set you up with at RISE).
Much love,
