On August 9th 1974, Richard Nixon became the first (and only so far) U.S. President to resign from office.

Making Gerald Ford the 9th Vice President to take over (the previous 8 had been due to death – history lesson here for you).

It’s referenced in the “We didn’t start the fire” song I covered in yesterday’s blog.

Tricky Dicky (as Nixon was known) was, of course, jumping before he was pushed.

The impending impeachment after the Watergate Scandal.

His involvement in, and attempts to cover up, the June 17th 1972 break-in of the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate Office Building in Washington DC.

A lesser know fact is that this break-in wasn’t Nixon’s idea.

It was bought to him by members of the Committee for the Re-Election of the President (CRP).

Initially as part of a larger, even more dodgy plan.

Which was refused.

Over two months the CRP returned with ever smaller plans until it was agreed.

He, and others involved, later said that if they had been presented with the final plans initially, they never would’ve agreed to them.

The repeated reduction from the original made them seem much smaller and less of an issue.

As many things can be.

It’s all context.

The difference from a frame of reference which is entirely in our own heads.

We only see healthy eating as boring and restrictive when it’s framed as a massive change from what we’re doing now.

When someone has come to us with the equivalent of a huge, complicated plan………….

We might do it for a few days…………

And then find “It’s all too much”.

When we could just make a number a relatively subtle changes to how we eat to create that average across the week that takes us in the right direction.

Exercise only feels too much when we decide the solution is to go from zero to several long, high intensity workouts.

And tell ourselves we need to do that or “leave it till next week”.

Where, again, just “some” would be a great step in the right direction.

Or, in a closer comparison to the Watergate situation, our friend will initially come to us with the ‘plan’ of a “big night out”……….

Before getting us with the smaller version of “just one”.

And us then going for Plan A after all.

There’s no problem with doing Plan A, of course – just maybe we’d benefit from not teaching our friend how to trick us into it.

Or for deciding to go for a Plan B right from the start that still has us going out but can be part of that average across the week.

Much love,
