And crimes that were never defined?
Recognise the lyric?
From ‘To the moon and back’ by Savage Garden.
I was listening to it the other day and that line popped out at me.
Crimes that were never defined.
Something we are, perhaps, guilty of when talking about our own behaviour.
When we say (in relation to our eating) that we’ve been naughty, what does that actually mean?
What is the definition of naughty?
How do we have to have eaten to have that officially classed as naughty?
What does that even mean?
When we say we’ve had a “bad” day / weekend / week / month…………
What’s the definition of that.
How many of the 24 / 60 / 168 / 700+ hours have to have been “bad”?
What does a “bad” hour look like?
Can one really bad thing make a “bad” month?
Several things of medium ‘badness’?
What is the official cut off between ‘good’ and ‘bad’?
Sure, there are decisions that will take us closer to or further from our goals.
Maybe “better” or “worse” ones (from that angle, at least).
But where’s the good – bad cut off?
You get the point.
Ultimately, it’s whatever works for you.
If labelling time periods as good and bad has worked for you…………..
If you achieved your goals and are maintaining them and working one new ones…………..
That’s cool.
If that approach leads you to feeling you’ve failed………….
To ‘writing off’ time periods with a view to ‘starting again’ in the future……………
It’s maybe worth questioning,
Are we doing the equivalent of being ‘tried for treason and crimes that were never defined’?
Much love,
Jon ‘Cabbage Garden’ Hall
P.S. 5 bonus ninja points for where I got that middle name. Hint: I didn’t make it up.
