I saw an interesting video the other day on Facebook.
It was a clip from a podcast interview with Simon Sinek.
“Inspirational speaker” and author of books such as “Start with why” and “The Infinite Game”.
In it he told the story of a shoe seller who taught him the concept of “Two not three”.
When the seller was showing a potential customer some shoes he only ever showed two at a time.
If they wanted to look at a another pair he said “Sure, which of these shall I put back”.
When faced with a decision between two options, potential customers would usually pick one of them.
When faced with three or more options they would often essentially pick nothing.
While the seller was obviously doing that to help sell more shoes, we can choose to narrow down our choices into a series of “this or that” choices that will will help us make better decisions.
Instead of vaguely trying to fit some exercise in today, we could ask ourselves questions like;
“Am going to exercise tomorrow?”
“Yes”
“Ok. Will I do it at RISE or at home?”
“RISE”
“Before or after work?”
“Before”
“6 or 7am”
“7”
Or if the answer is “Home”;
“RISE online Session or run?”
“Online Session”
“Live or pre-recorded?
“Live”
“Before or after work?”
“After”
And so on.
Or similar with our food.
Rather than just rolling through the day eating whatever is available when we’re hungry we could do some version of;
“Am I going to eat that meal at home or elsewhere?”
“Elsewhere”
“Take something with me or get something when I’m out?”
“Get something when I’m out”
“Hot or cold?”
“Cold”.
“Meal deal from the shop or something from the work canteen?”
“Meal deal”
“Calorie surplus or deficit?”
“Deficit”
It doesn’t just need to be stuff related to our health and fitness.
Instead of “What should we do tonight?”, it could be;
“Shall we stay in or go out?”
“In”
“Watch something or do something?”
“Watch something”
“Film or series?”
“Film”
And so on.
All options are still on the table.
We’re not really limiting ourselves.
We’re just using a series of A-B questions to help us make a decision.
Two not three.
Try it.
Much love,
Jon ‘s company’ Hall
