You know the expression ‘Can’t be @rsed’? CBA for short. When you can’t be bothered to do something. Usually about the things we know we should do. A lack of motivation to do what’s required. Conveniently enough the opposite of CBA is ABC. The initials of the three ‘components’ of what’s called Self Determination Theory (SDT). A model for understanding motivation. The thing we so often feel we’re struggling with. Often because we’re essentially just waiting for it to come find us. Not knowing how to approach things in a way that will increase the chances of it showing up. We can’t force it to grow. But, like a gardener, we can provide the conditions that make that most likely. Today’s blog just gives you the three parts. I’ll cover each one in a bit more depth over the next three days. Why they matter – and what might be getting in the way of them. But, for today, I just want you to remember three words. Autonomy. Belonging. Competence. ABC. We got that? Repeat it back in your head (or out loud if you’d like some strange looks at work). Autonomy. Belonging. Competence. ABC. See you tomorrow for the next thrilling instalment 😉
