Anyone read “The Bear Hunt”?
Probably to your kids.
Or maybe someone else’s?
Or maybe you just like kids’ books.
If you haven’t read it, the main characters decide to go looking for a bear.
Like you do.
They encounter various challenges.
Swishy, swashy grass.
Some water.
A cave.
And every time they say “We can’t go over it. We can’t go under it. Uh oh – we’ve got to go through it”.
I’ll be honest, it’s not my favourite.
————- Fellow parents of young children may enjoy the parody book ‘We’re Going on a Bar Hunt’ —————-
I prefer a bit of Julia Donaldson me.
But, do you know what thing what we all usually go ‘under’?
Reporting on our food intake.
The research shows that we are all absolutely rubbish at self reporting our food intake.
Even dietitians who, in theory, should be good at it, under report.
To about half the extent as the general population, sure.
But still under.
Everyone does it.
Us, them, you.
When asked to record what we eat and then compare that to what we actually ate……….
Or compare self calculated calorie intake to energy levels recorded through testing……….
We all, on average, ‘go under it’.
No criticism, no emotion – we all do it.
And, as always, knowledge is power.
Knowing that we’re pretty rubbish at recording what we eat, changes the conversation.
From “I don’t know why I’m not losing weight when I’m eating so little”………..
To “I need to figure out what I’m missing”.
We know tracking our food is a bit of a pain.
But only a bit.
And it’s worth it.
And it’s worth getting a bit better at it – having a think about what we’re missing (we help our guys with this – check myrise.co.uk/briefing-meeting if you like the idea of being helped with things that can be tricky rather than just been told to “try harder”).
What numbers might not be quite right.
Either in what we’re recording.
Or what it says we need.
Or both.
When it seems like we should be losing weight and we’re not, it’s always worth remembering;
1. When in a confirmed calorie deficit under laboratory conditions, everybody loses weight
2. Everybody, on average, under reports their food intake
