It’s not uncommon that when I talk to people about their relationship with food……
They feel that’s not something that’s relevant to them.
They feel they just need to be “told what to do” eating wise, and they will do it.
Or maybe that some of the logistics and circumstances of their life need to change to enable them to eat differently.
People can often be reluctant to accept that their emotional relationship with what they consume is a factor.
But we all have a relationship with food.
And I would wager that the overwhelming majority of us do, to some degree, use food and drink to change how we feel.
Without realising it, our mind is constantly looking for things that can change how we are feeling.
Our state.
It’s the same for all of us.
And there’s a myriad of different ways that we can change how we feel.
Some are harder or easier than others to do.
Some mostly giving upsides.
Some providing a mixture of pros and cons.
Some might not apply to us.
But the issue with what we put in our mouth is that it was the first one we were taught.
As a baby, we were given milk to soothe us.
And that continued onwards with solid food.
Outside of sleep, it was, at one point, the only way we had to soothe ourselves.
Exercise, gambling, alcohol, sex, shopping and all sorts of other methods of changing our state may have come to us later……..
But food and drink will always be the one we’ve had the longest.
And realising, and then remembering, that at least part of our reasoning for what we’re eating is in relation to how we’re feeling and how we want to feel……..
Can be a powerful first step in helping us make different decisions.
Doing different things that positively change our state (because ignoring it probably isn’t going to work).
Maybe some of the above, but in a more positive combination.
Maybe things we haven’t tried before like meditation, mindfulness, breathwork or journaling.
But fundamentally realising when we are wanting to change how we feel and being aware that there are other ways to do it.

Much love,

P.S. Many people who join us report that this is the first time they’ve ever enjoyed exercise. If you’ve never particularly liked it (as is the case for most) see if that’s different at www.myrise.co.uk/apply?
