Have you ever said the phrase “note to self”?
Or posted it on social media?
I’ve just searched for that phrase from friends on Facebook and found the following statements directly preceded by “note to self”;
– you are 25 not 18 & you will ache the next morning!!!
– must improve my Spanish ended up with a fish butty lol
– stop buying films from sky as they also send the DVD
– don’t start wallpapering at 4.30pm… will have to finish it off in the morning!
– don’t challenge your netball crazy kids to a shooting competition and certainly not for money
– turning up at a festival in a suit confuses people
– You cannot wing a half marathon
And many, many more.
For all the times you’ve said it though, how many times have you actually written a note to yourself?
An actual written note that would be delivered at the appropriate time?
Saying it out loud or writing in on socials probably isn’t going to help any more than the experience itself (without the “note”) would have, is it?
And, whilst we might learn from the more ‘extreme’ experiences that precede these types of posts…………
A fairly high proportion of us not getting what we want………….
Comes from us making the same relatively little ‘mistakes’ time and time again.
The missed workouts or not-so-great food choices that we regret after.
So………
Might that be the best type of note to send ourselves?
We’re liable to forget otherwise, aren’t we?
A reminder on our phone, maybe?
Post it note on the monitor?
A delayed email to our self?
“Hey Jon – this is you after you last smashed a bottle of wine and a tub of Ben an Jerry’s in front of the TV. I kinda enjoyed it, but mostly regretted it. Don’t make the same mistake I made tonight!”
“Reminder – you always regret the workouts you miss and never regret those you make”
“Note to self – you always regret it in the morning when you stay up past X o clock doom scrolling or binge watching box sets”
“Future Jon – don’t do what past Jon did and swing by Dominoes on the way home. It’s always mildly disappointing and knocking something up in the kitchen only really takes a couple of minutes more and you know this, don’t you?”
And so on.
If you don’t regret your decisions, that’s awesome.
If you consistently do, maybe a real “note to self” will help remind you of that at the opportune point.
Much love,
Jon ‘man Pat’ Hall
P.S. Note to you – if you regret not clicking this link in the past and being lighter, slimmer, healthier, fitter and feeling better now (because I guarantee you would be), then don’t make that same mistake again –> www.myrise.co.uk/apply
