If you get home of an evening and someone asks “How’s your day gone?”, what’s your normal response?
I’d wager what initially jumps to mind is the parts of the day that didn’t go so well.
The work that didn’t get done.
The frustrating interaction with a boss or colleague.
The annoying stuff.
I’d also happily place a bet that the overwhelming majority of the day went as planned or better.
But we probably barely mentioned that.
If at all.
It’s human nature.
It’s where our brains are more naturally drawn unless we train them otherwise.
We get full detailed descriptions of the less good stuff.
We colour it in.
Make it feel like it’s happening right now.
The stuff that went well gets an outline sketch at most.
Instantly forgotten.
Written off as “expected behaviour”.
And weeks, months and years of describing our days like that massively affects our opinion of our lives.
Makes us feel that our lives are going badly when probably nearly all of it is going okay or better.
I’ve got an easy way to remedy this.
But I can guarantee that 99% of people that read this won’t do it.
Every night, write down your three biggest wins of the day.
Every week list the five biggest out of the 21 that you’ve got.
Every month pick out the 10 biggest out of the 90 plus you have.
That’s a total of a handful of minutes of work per month.
And I’ve never known anyone to do it who hasn’t reported improvements both in how they felt about their lives……..
And increased focus and ability to make changes to the areas that they want to.
As with most things, it starts difficult.
We struggled to think of anything that went well.
Writing off those “expected behaviours”.
Judging those things are somehow less worthy than they are.
But, as with most things, it gets easier with practise.
You’re looking at minutes of work per month with a guarantee from me that will make you feel better.
Your call if you do anything with it………
Much love,
Jon ‘Hour 2’ Hall
