On Monday I had pretty much the exact same conversation with several different people.

That usually means loads more people are thinking the same thing.

Sometimes, by sheer coincidence, several people use pretty much the exact same phrase.

In this case the people were explaining why either they were struggling to lose weight or perhaps had gained some since I’d last seen them.

——- Despite having a great success rate for the industry, people do sometimes gain weight during parts of their time with us. That’s life. Ignore any setup that tells you it’s otherwise with them – they are lying to your face or utterly clueless about what’s happening with all of their members. Or, most likely, both ——–

Each person said some version of “My problem is I eat and drink more at the weekend”.

Which, as I said in response, is literally everyone’s problem.

I eat and drink more at the weekends.

All my friends and family do.

I’d say every member I’ve ever had conversations with about their eating through the week has.

In fact, I can’t think of a single person I’ve ever encountered that doesn’t to some degree.

It’s an absolute given.

Once you realise that, it changes the question completely.

It shifts it from being……….

“I can’t lose weight because I eat and drink more at the weekend” to……….

“How do I lose weight given that I eat and drink more at the weekend?”

We look at what others are doing to allow eating and drinking more at the weekend whilst still losing (or maintaining) weight.

Rather than kidding ourselves that they’re not eating and drinking more at the weekend.

What matters is the full week, not one or two days in isolation.

Some degree of damage limitation at the weekend (rather than telling ourselves “writing off” time periods is a thing).

Some calorie and / or portion reduction in the week.

We don’t do anything else that is exactly the same every day.

So why do we expect our eating to be like that?

Much love,

Jon ‘Problem Child’ Hall
