At the point of this blog coming out (11am on Saturday 7th May 2022) the third of our groups will be starting the Born Survivor course at Capesthorne Hall.
For those that have never heard of it, it’s a 10k through the grounds of Capesthorne with 35 obstacles on the way.
And, for the vast majority of people who join us, it’s literally the last thing they think they’d ever even consider doing.
Many recoil in horror when they see videos and pictures.
And I get that.
The vast majority of our joiners have never massively got on with exercise.
Most falling between being “ok doing it, I suppose” to “always hated it”.
They’ve tried gyms and often found them some combination of boring, confusing and intimidating.
Not got the lasting results they’d like from them.
Probably tried a few diets and not been keen on them either.
This isn’t everyone who joins.
But it’s most.
So 10k through fields, water, mud and obstacles is really not something they fancy.
And it was never supposed to be our ‘thing’.
Yet, for the fourth time we’ll have over 50 of us doing it today.
As a percentage of our membership base, that’s pretty high.
Like the local Globo-Gym getting 1,000 people out.
And we always have the biggest team there.
Other facilities that market to and attract OCR athletes turning out teams of 10 or 15.
For some reason, it captures the imagination of a lot of our members.
Challenging but not impossible (you go entirely at your own paces, in groups and bypass any obstacles you’re not keen on).
Something we can use as motivation to work up to being able to do.
Something that we can be proud of ourselves for achieving.
That will stretch us, but not too far.
Sometimes relatively easy goals can be easy to lose interest in.
They might not inspire us and cause us to get our teeth into what needs to be done.
Sometimes the gap between what we’re doing now and what we need to do to get to a small goal…………..
Is small enough that we easily slip back into old habits.
Losing 0.5lbs a week is cool.
But it’s easy to lose enthusiasm or to end up eating as we were before because it’s not different enough to what we intended to do.
Just getting to do regular exercise is great.
But getting into that dress or pair or trousers or being able to do a press up or pull up for the first time can be much more motivating.
No right or wrong, as always.
But if your goal feels a bit “meh” and is easy to lose interest in…………..
The maybe more of a stretch will inspire you (check www.myrise.co.uk/apply if you like the idea of a goal that will inspire you and some proven help in achieving it).
Goldilocks.
Not too easy.
Not too hard.
Much love,
Jon ‘My nephew is doing it today. On his 16th birthday no less. He’ll be the youngest entrant ever’ Hall
