A word that I talk about in these blogs and elsewhere is “accountability”.
And that’s often what people feel they need more of before they join.
With the things they’ve done before, it hasn’t really mattered if they’ve done them or not.
Not short term anyway.
No one notices or cares if you go to the Globo Gym that you’ve joined or not.
Our friends and family aren’t really going to be calling us out when we stop doing the ‘latest diet’.
They might even be subconsciously glad that that we have.
Having someone to be accountable to can be a powerful part of the equation.
But we’ve never really been taught about accountability.
Sounds good, but we don’t necessarily approach it in the best way.
Often when people talk to me about me holding them accountable, I’ll ask “What do you want me to hold you accountable to?”.
And their answer will normally be something like “This”.
“Doing it”.
“All of it”.
And that sounds great.
But it’s a bit vague.
And the problem with vague is it’s often left to just how we feel about it.
If I were to ask a couple of days later “Are you doing ‘all of it’?”…….
We would probably say “No”.
Feel that we’ve “failed”.
Decide to “start again next week”.
When we put specifics to an intention and have someone who will check in with us on that…….
It doesn’t make it automatically happen.
But, from my experience, it makes it a lot more likely.
If we decide what we’re going to do and when…….
Then we’re likely to schedule it and make plans around it.
Get the buy-in of those that involved in helping making it happen (or the other things around it happen).
We’ll know if we’re on track.
And we’ll have something to look at and learn from if we’re not.
Putting a number on something is an easy first step.
A number of activities in a certain time frame.
“I’m going to do three workouts and eat a total calorie of 12,000 calories this week”……..
Is more likely to get scheduled, planned for and done than “I’m going to eat better and do some more exercise”.
And even more likely when you set that intention with someone, like me, who will then check in with you on it (it’s www.myrise.co.uk/apply if you like the sound of that and other systems designed to help you get the results your desire, not just take a monthly DD for access to exercise equipment).
Much love,
